Catholic Education Week takes place from Sunday, May 3 to Friday, May 8. The disciples asked Jesus to ‘increase our faith’. That is our goal in publicly funded Catholic education in collaboration with the family and the parish. We know that keeping the theme of faith alive is a constant challenge in the world of 2015. But, we can be assured by the words of the disciples, “were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road?” (Lk 24:32) We are in need of the support and prayers of the entire Catholic community to counteract the increasingly strident demand that the funding of Catholic schools be terminated. Once again we will have a province-wide mass scheduled for May 7, 2015 in our high schools organized by our Catholic Student Trustees.
The special collection entitled Seminary is now called Ministry Formation. The new name more accurately reflects the needs of the Church today to support the faithful commitment of priests, deacons, seminarians, pastoral workers and many lay ministries. The proceeds will be used for professional development of lay leadership in ministries at the parochial or diocesan level as well as ongoing support for vocations and professional development of the clergy.

The graceful celebration of the liturgy, complete with harmonious music, inspiring homilies and the active participation of the faithful are the foundational elements that attract people to our liturgy (Ars celebrandi et adorandi: A pastoral letter by His Excellency, John Paprocki, Bishop of Springfield in Illinois, USA, June 22, 2014). The way we welcome newcomers to our parish immediately speaks to their hearts about God’s welcome reserved for them; the way we sing God’s praises together immediately reflects our desire to join our voices in one unified song of praise; the way we tell the story of God’s presence with his people immediately reminds us that the one who has always loved us is in our midst, tenderly welcoming all those who approach; the care we lavish on others, paying attention to their needs immediately prepares us for the special food that Jesus offers to each of those who gather at his table. This parish has a respected history of welcoming those who come through our doors, and it doesn’t take long before even newcomers realize that there is something very special happening here. It is the joy of a people who have experienced the joy of the gospel that is living in our midst, the song of an Easter people who has heard the good news – He is risen! He is not here! – and is courageous enough to proclaim this good news to all who will hear it. On behalf of all those who have come, from near and far, to celebrate the liturgy of the Easter Triduum with us this year, I want to say thank you to all those who have contributed in any way to the beautiful celebration we have witnessed. It is part of the song that is sung continuously by God’s people, whenever and wherever we gather. May it echo in our hearts to dispel all darkness and doubt, may it always be a reminder for us of the love we share as beloved children of God, and may it inspire us always to invite others to discover the joy that inhabits our hearts.
